Gakpo Rejected Ghana for Holland, According to Former Ghanaian Coach

The former coach of the Black Stars of Ghana, Charles Akonnor, has revealed that Netherlands star, Cody Gakpo, rejected the West African country.

Akonnor said that the Ghana Football Association attempted to convince the Dutch attacker to represent Ghana owing to his ancestry in the West African country. However, Gakpo flatly rejected any effort to represent the country.

Despite knowing of Ghana’s interest in him as an international player, the PSV forward insisted in playing for the Oranges.

According to GHANASoccernet.com’s comment from Akonnor on Super Sport TV, he said, “Yes, we tried to let him play for Ghana but he ended up rejecting us for the Netherlands. This was about a year ago when he was at the junior level,”

The Netherlands defeated Senegal in their first Group A match, with the striker scoring the game’s first goal.

Following his impressive performance in the Dutch Eredivisie, Gakpo has been on the radar of English powerhouse Manchester United.

In 14 appearances, the 23-year-old has contributed 12 assists and nine goals.

Gakpo’s transfer to English Premier League Clubs

Meanwhile, several English teams have been linked to the Dutch star, who they believe would be a wonderful addition to their squad.

The attacker expressed interest in joining Erik Ten Hag during the summer transfer window, but the deal was unsuccessful.

Numerous English teams, including Newcastle, Arsenal, and others, are said to have interest in the player.
