Tension As Armed Policemen Take Over Ekiti Assembly

There was heavy presence of armed officers of the Nigeria Police Force at the complex of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on Wednesday (today).

Reports reaching Naija News revealed that the assembly complex was shut down following a report about a planned attack by some unidentified hoodlums.

In this regard, the state police command deployed its operatives to man various locations in the House to prevent the purported invasion and breakdown of law and order.

Reports said Staff of the Assembly escaped from their offices and headed to their various homes over fear of being attacked by the thugs.

Some workers at the assembly who spoke with newsmen but wished to be kept anonymous explained that there was an order from the State Police Headquarters that workers should vacate the assembly in the interest of peace.

They said they were told that some people were planning to attack the House of Assembly.

When contacted on the incident, the newly-elected Speaker of the Assembly, Gboyega Aribisogan, told newsmen on the telephone that there was no cause for alarm.

He noted that the leadership of the police command in Ekiti had informed the lawmakers this morning that they had verifiable intelligence about some hoodlums coming to attack the assembly complex.

“And to avoid a breakdown of law and order, there’s a need for their presence, and they have promised to conduct an investigation into the matter and report to us before the close of work today.

“I want to encourage my colleagues and staff of the Assembly to be patient and bear with us.

“Normalcy will soon return to the house,” Aribisogan told Vanguard Newspaper.

Naija News recalls that Aribisogan was elected as the new Speaker of the assembly on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, after defeating Mrs Olubunmi Adelugba from Emure Ekiti.
