UEL: Poor Defensive Error Hands PSV The Victory Over Arsenal

Dutch host, PSV Eindhoven defeated Arsenal in the Europa League reverse fixture at the Philips stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s team may be said to have escaped with a 2-nil defeat since the Dutch side had five shots at Aaron Ramsdale’s goal.

The assistant referee intervened on their behalf three times, and the video assistant referee (VAR) also saved them once when he correctly called a close-range offside.

The visitors eventually ran out of options to avoid defeat in Holland, as PSV scored twice. As a result, Group A becomes more interesting, with the Dutch team behind Arsenal by two points.

To take the top spot with one game remaining, Arsenal merely needed a draw in this contest. Now they need to defeat Zurich the next week to avoid playing a playoff matchup with a Champions League dropout.

At halftime, Mikel Arteta’s team was still in contention despite Cody Gakpo and the outstanding Xavi Simons having goals disallowed.

After the break, Gakpo was rejected once more. But Joey Veerman’s first-time finish from 16 yards and a header by substitute Luuk de Jong after a mistake by keeper Aaron Ramsdale on his European debut could not be denied.

With 15 points, Arteta’s team still held onto the first place in Group A, but to ensure a spot in the round of 16, they would have to defeat Swiss club, Zurich, at the Emirates Stadium.
