Rampant Liverpool Beat Ajax To Book Last-16 Spot

Liverpool eased to the Champions League last-16 after defeating Ajax at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Wednesday evening.

Jurgen Klopp’s team advanced to the next round of the Champions League with one match remaining after an odd night in Amsterdam, where they were outclassed for 30 minutes before finding the back of the net.

The Reds bounced back with a ruthless second-half performance, putting their domestic issues behind them and sealing their last-16 spot.

Being able to defeat the Dutch powerhouse is a reasonable result for the German manager given that they lost their opening group match 4-1 to Napoli.

Steven Berghuis missed a chance in the opening seconds when it appeared easier to score against Klopp’s men, who were otherwise atrocious for the first 30 minutes.

Three minutes before halftime, Jordan Henderson passed to Mo Salah, who then scored to spark the awakening for the Reds. Then, early in the second half, Darwin Nunez scored with a header, which was immediately followed by a piercing Harvey Elliott angle shot.

It was a significant turnaround and sufficient to neutralise an Ajax threat that seemed to vanish once they missed a number of early opportunities.

Liverpool can host Napoli in the final round of group-stage matches next week knowing that their place is secured thanks to the easy victory against the Eredivisie reigning champions.
