"It Wasn't Easy" - APC National Chairman Opens Up On How Akpabio, Abbas, Others Emerged

The decision of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu to suspend directors of various departments has led to a crisis in the ruling party.

Adamu, on the 22nd of April, 2022, suspended all departmental directors at the national secretariat of the party over allegations of corruption.

They are Elder Anietie Offong (Director, Welfare), Bartholomew I. Ugwoke (Research); Abubakar Suleiman (Finance), Dr Suleiman Abubakar (Administration), Salisu Na’inna Dambatta (Publicity), and Dare Oketade, Head, Legal.

Adamu, following his appointment as the National Chairman of the ruling party, set up a transition committee headed by a former governor of Jigawa State, Ali Saad Birnin Kudu.

The committee was directed to study the handing over notes of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee led by the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni and other issues affecting the party.

The directors were eventually relieved of their assignment based on the recommendations of the committee.

There are claims that the efforts of the directors to get back to their offices were hindered.

Sources at the secretariat of the party that spoke with Daily Trust disclosed that the suspended directors after their letter to the National Executive Committee (NEC) proved abortive also wrote another letter to the National Working Committee (NWC).

They also copied the Chairman of Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and Kebbi State governor, Atiku Bagudu in the letter demanding to return to their offices.

The directors whose one-month leave started on the 22nd of April and ended on May 22, 2022, were not allowed to return to their offices.

Two officials at the party’s headquarters while speaking on the development said the directors have been replaced.

One of the officials said, “I can tell you on authority that while they kept waiting, some people were appointed to replace them.”

Another official at the party’s secretariat also confirmed that “they have since been replaced.”

Meanwhile, some officials and secretariat workers have accused Adamu and the party’s national secretary, Iyiola Omisore of appointing new directors without the knowledge of other key players.
