Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Monday 22nd August 2022.

The PUNCH: The Academic Staff Union of Universities has raised the alarm over the exodus of lecturers from the nation’s universities for greener pastures abroad. The union attributed the development to the Federal Government’s poor treatment of its members which it said had forced many to venture into other sources of livelihood.

The Guardian: Dire implications await the Nigerian economy should foreign airlines make good their threat to withdraw flight services over stuck funds estimated to have reached $464 million as of July 2022. Specifically, the exit of foreign carriers that account for 80 per cent of commercial aviation earnings to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will hobble the projected growth of the air transport sector and cost Nigeria $1.36 billion or N567.12 billion (at $/N417) yearly.

This Day: Presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has said the idea of manual collation of election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is a ploy to lay the groundwork for rigging next year’s general election. Atiku, who spoke through one of his spokesmen, Daniel Bwala, yesterday, was reacting to a statement credited to the National Commissioner of INEC in charge of Information and Chairman, Voter Education, Festus Okoye, that the 2023 general election results would be transmitted manually.

The Nation: The era of manual transmission of election results is gone for good, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said yesterday. The electronic transmission of poll results, the electoral umpire said, has come to stay.

Daily Trust: Cases of monkeypox have spread to 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), raising fears among citizens. This is just as experts have called for increased efforts by all stakeholders towards curbing the situation. Monkeypox is a viral disease transmitted from animals to humans and from humans to humans.
