CAF Announces Increase Of 150% In Women’s AFCON Prize Money

In line with the new policy to make African Women’s football more attractive in line with Women’s football global competitiveness, the President of CAF Dr Patrice Motsepe has announced an increase of 150% in prize money for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2022.

The tournament kicked off on Saturday night, in Rabat, Morocco, Naija News reports.

In the opening match, hosts Morocco defeated Burkina Faso 1-0 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, in Rabat.

According to CAF President, the overall prize money of the competition has been increased from $975,000 to $2,400,000 – an increase of almost $1.5 million.

The President said “CAF Executive Committee have identified women’s football as amongst the top priorities of its activities.”

Following the increase, the winner of this year’s edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2022 will pocket five hundred thousand US dollars ($500,000), as against $200,000 previously meant for the winner.

The prize money for runners-up has almost doubled from $175,000 to $300,000 and the semi-finalists will get $225,000 each which has increased from $125,000.

The 12th African Women Cup of Nations will end on 23 July, 2022.
