The Governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola on Monday distributed 5kg bags of Garri to 30,000 vulnerable people in the state.

The state government while stating the reason for sharing the garri, noted that its part of his government initiative aimed at cushioning the effects of COVID-19 on the economy.

The staple food was distributed on Monday at the state secretariat Abere, Osogbo.

The state Governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Wole Oyebamiji, said the distribution of the foodstuff would help to complement the economic value chain projected by the Oyetola’s administration.

Oyebamiji further stated that the government must ensure that farmers have patronage and support after they have been through the farming process.

He said, “Our administration is a government of the people, by the people and for the people and as such, the governor has a great interest in the growth of the economy of the state.

“If we are encouraging young men and women to go into farming, we as a government have a responsibility to ensure that they have patronage and to ensure that they have support so that going back to the farm will be meaningful because it is not easy to encourage youths to go back to farm without the necessary support.

“The local production of gaari by our people is an attestation to the fact that there is wealth in farming.

“This will be an encouragement to boost farming, grow our economy and provide employment opportunities for our people.

“We are proud to do it, and we are not regretting it. This will not in any way relegate other staple foods that we have adopted for distribution. We believe we should encourage local productions too.”
