Fire Razes Maiduguri Market

Property worth several millions of Naira were on Thursday night destroyed when a raging fire razed many shops in the Maiduguri GSM market.

Popularly called “Kasuwar Jagol” in local parlance, the GSM market is located at Post Office area of the town and houses thousands of traders and artisans.

It was gathered that the fire started at about 8:00 pm and lasted for many hours before men of the fire service were able to put it out with support from other security personnel and members of the community.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Borno Fire Service, Mr Ambursa Pindar, who confirmed the incident, said that the service deployed five fire-fighting vehicles to the scene of the fire.

He noted that the extent and impact of the destruction caused by the fire would be ascertained after an assessment of the incident.

An eye witness, Mr Abdulrahman Tahir, a cell phone trader in the market said the quick response by the fire service team prevented the spread of the fire to other shops and enabled some shop owners to save their property from the inferno.

NAN reports that armed security personnel were deployed to the market to guard against looting by hoodlums who might want to take advantage of the situation.
