Two suicide bombers blew themselves up in a crowd in northeastern Nigeria, killing three people and wounding eight in an attack attributed to Boko Haram Islamists, relief services reported on Wednesday.

The double explosion occurred Tuesday evening in Mafa, an agglomeration located about fifty km from the regional capital of Borno State, Maiduguri.

According to the official of the State Emergency Management Agency (Sema), Bello Danbatta, the two women entered the city by joining a group of women who went to fetch wood for cooking.

The death toll of three dead and eight wounded given by Mr. Danbatta was confirmed by the spokesman of the local police Adamu Mohammed.

The attack carries the mark of the Islamist group Boko Haram who regularly uses women to commit suicide attacks against civilian targets such as mosques, markets or bus stations.

The last suicide attack by jihadists was in June, when a triple attack on a crowd watching a football match had left some 30 people dead.

In ten years, the Boko Haram insurgency has killed some 27,000 people, displaced more than two million people in the region, and spread to neighboring countries in northeastern Nigeria.
