Some suspected political thugs in the Ilesa area of Osun State have been arrested by troops of the Nigerian Army attached to Operation Safe Conduct and a pistol with three cartridges was recovered in the process.

This was prior to the postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly elections which were earlier fixed for February 16.

According to Punch, the suspects were apprehended at around 7.30am on Saturday at Iwajara Junction, Ilesa, while planning to disrupt the Saturday elections which have been postponed by the Independent National Electoral Commission till February 23.

In a statement released by the army, the suspects arrested were on a motorcycle and armed with dangerous objects as they plan to disrupt the polling unit in the Ilesa-East Local Government Area.

According to further reports, other weapons recovered from them included one cutlass and three cartridges.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Col Sagir Musa, while speaking on the arrest stated that the suspects would be handed over to the police for further interrogation and prosecution.

“Troops of Operation Safe Conduct deployed to provide security for the conduct of free, fair and credible presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday intercepted three hoodlums on a motorcycle moving towards the Ilesa-East LGA to disrupt smooth conduct of elections in that area.

“The hoodlums were arrested and they will be handed over to the police upon completion of initial profiling and investigation.”
