NGO Volunteers To Supervise Yobe State Government Projects

A non governmental organisation, Connected Development (CODE) has today promised to voluntarily monitor ongoing projects for the Yobe state government.

CODE explained that the motive is to ensure that qualitative job was executed.

Mr Chambers Umezulike, the Senior Project Manager Connected Department of the organisation, stated this when he visited Alhaji Goni Ibrahim, the Executive Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in Damaturu.

According to him, the monitoring activities would be carried out under its ongoing project known as “Follow the Money”.

“We are looking for a way to collaborate with this board to be an independent monitors to all the contracts the board awarded to ensure contractors are carrying out the jobs according to specifications.

“And also to enlighten and instil ownership spirit in the people of the communities in which such projects are being carried out for close supervision and monitoring.

“There are instances where government projects are bastardised for lack of sense of ownership and involvement of community members, hence we want begin to get them deeply involve,” he said.

Responding, the SUBEB chairman said the idea was timely, adding that the board would work with any development partner for the betterment of the good people of Yobe.

“Follow the Money” is a concept used in tracking and monitoring the implementation of capital funds intended for rural communities in the areas of education, environment and health across Nigeria.
