A middle aged man, identified as Abang, declared wanted by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for kidnapping, has been found and arrested in Jigawa State.

Abang was apprehended by the police while transacting business in one of the banks in Hadejia Local Government Area of the state.

The alleged kidnapping had been in hiding within Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State.

Parading the35-year-old suspect before journalists on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state, SP Abdul Jinjiri said the suspect has been at large since June 2017, when he escaped from police custody in Akwa Ibom. Jinjiri added that Abang had since then been taking shelter in his brother’s apartment in Nguru, which is about 70 kilometres from Hadejia town.

The suspect told our reporter that he was wrongly accused by his people of indulging in kidnapping, which prompted the police in Akwa Ibom to arrest and detain him for three months.

According to Abang, “they detained me for three months after they shot me on my leg but later released me for lack of evidence to prosecute me.

“After that, I heard that I ran away from police cell. I’ve since been staying with my elder brother, who is a soldier, in Nguru. I was arrested when I was trying to withdraw some money that I asked my wife to send to me.”

The PPRO stated that the Jigawa State Police Command has made arrangements to transfer him to the Akwa Ibom State police command for prosecution.
