Niger State Government Offers To Retrain Teachers
Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello , yesterday said 60% of teachers in the state’s public schools across the 25 local government are not qualified.
This, he said to the educational stakeholders while speaking at the end of year academic day programme of the State Teachers Professional Development Institute Implementation Committee, NSTPDIIC, in Mararaban Dandaudu.
He said the standard of education in the state is very low, while promising that the unqualified teachers would not be sacked, but rather sent to school for retraining, adding that “those that cannot be retrained will be asked to go back to school.
“The essence of this Institute is to ensure qualitative education and production of quality teachers for the state and to also ensure that the teaching profession is well regulated and until a teacher is certificated, he or she will not be allowed to teach henceforth.”
“With the current state of infrastructure, especially in boarding schools, there is no way we can produce good future leaders, as these children will feel we did not take good care of them. That is why we must try to give them some level of comfort.”
Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Hajiya Fatima Madugu, in her address, commended Governor Bello’s administration for its commitment to the education sector, particularly the Whole School Approach initiative.
