Manchester City and Liverpool have written to fans ahead of their EFL round of 16 clash on Thursday, December 22, 2022.

In the open letter to the fans, Manchester City and Liverpool assured them that they are “fully committed to dealing with unacceptable behaviours” during games.

The two Premier League clubs had to make this commitment following trouble at their recent games especially in the 2022-2023 season.

Due to fans trouble at stadiums, the clubs and their fan groups held a meeting in November after which they all committed to improving relations.

In line with that, the two clubs published a letter on December 20, 2022 in which they urged their supporters to report any incidents “that cause harm” ahead of their EFL round of 16 clash.

Recall that after Liverpool beat Manchester City 1-0 at Anfield on October 16, 2022, City boss Pep Guardiola said members of the Anfield crowd threw coins at him during the game, while Liverpool condemned “vile” chanting from the away end.

Also, Manchester City was said to be unhappy with a pre-match comments from Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp about City’s outrageous transfer businesses.

The remark was tagged xenophobic, an allegation Jurgen Klopp refused to accept. Also, Manchester City alleged that the windscreen of their bus was damaged as it left Anfield in November.

A letter from Liverpool chief executive Billy Hogan and City counterpart Ferran Soriano read in parts: “The passion and enthusiasm that we see from our fans when we play each other – at the Etihad Stadium or Anfield – is part of what makes matches between our clubs so special.

“We know you are committed to creating a stadium environment where everyone is welcomed, accepted and has a fantastic matchday experience.

“Regrettably, based on recent meetings between our clubs, we also know that a minority of fans are responsible for behaviours and actions that have no place in our game.

“We are therefore writing to ask for your full support in tackling these behaviours and to ensure that both of our clubs’ good names are preserved.”

For the first time since their last meeting in October, Liverpool and Manchester City will clash in the EFL round of 16 at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday, December 22, 2022. The match is scheduled to kick-off at 21:00.
