Security operatives foil Boko Haram attack

An officer of the Nigerian Army has alleged that troops engaged in the war against the deadly Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgents are using old weapons to fight the terrorist group.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, the soldier said the weapons used against the terrorists were those recovered from the Biafra Army after the civil war ended in 1970.

He accused top army officers, including former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, of using the Boko Haram war as an enterprise to enrich themselves at the expense of their lives.

“Some of these guns were bought by (Chukwuemeka Odumegwu) Ojukwu for the Biafran Army during the civil war. They were handed over to the Nigerian government after he and other leaders of the Biafra Army surrendered to General Yakubu Gowon.

“The bombs given to us by Buratai were made over 50 years ago as well, so we hardly use them,” he told SaharaReporters.

Meanwhile, some Nigerian soldiers, who are part of the troops fighting Boko Haram and other insurgents in the North East region have pleaded to be rotated and given a break from the war front.

The troops who lamented that they have been fighting the insurgents for five consecutive years or more, said they had hoped they would have been rotated by their commanders.

The soldiers, part of the 3 Battalion operating in the Gamboru/Ngala and Rann areas of Borno State lamented that they have overstayed and this has affected their morale negatively

Some of them who pleaded anonymity told HumAngle that other corps have been rotated but they have no idea why they have been kept on the war front for so long.

They, therefore, appealed to the military authorities, their commanders, and the new Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Ibrahim Attahiru to look into their case.
