2027: Sowore Promises ₦500,000 Minimum Wage, Vows To Restore Petrol Subsidy

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has joined the growing debate over petrol subsidy ahead of the 2027 presidential election, saying he would restore the policy if elected president.

The SaharaReporters publisher also promised to introduce a minimum monthly wage of ₦500,000 for Nigerian workers.

Sowore made the declarations in a post on his official 𝕏 handle on Monday, Naija News reports.

He said attempts to challenge his proposed wage policy with statistics would not change his position.

“Attempts to water down our proposal for a N500,000 monthly living wage with funny statistics will not change our position.

“Under our government, Nigerian workers will earn a minimum wage of at least N500,000 monthly. We will also restore the petrol subsidy.

“Workers deserve wages they can actually live on,” he wrote.

Sowore’s position comes amid renewed debate over the removal of petrol subsidy and whether it should be restored ahead of the 2027 election.

Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has also pledged to introduce a form of petrol subsidy if elected.

Atiku has proposed a targeted arrangement that would support domestic refineries rather than revive the previous import-based subsidy system.

However, the position differs from that of some other presidential contenders, including the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has rejected a return to the old subsidy regime.

Makinde has instead proposed that crude supplied to Nigerian refineries should be priced more cheaply to help reduce the cost of petrol for consumers.
