Tottenham Complete £85 Million Signing Of Mateus Fernandes From West Ham

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in an £85 million deal.

Mateus Fernandes, 21, has signed a six-year contract after completing a club-record move and becomes one of Spurs’ biggest additions of the summer as Roberto De Zerbi continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new season.

Fernandes arrives after two impressive Premier League campaigns, first with Southampton and then West Ham, where he established himself as one of the league’s standout young midfielders.

Speaking after the move was confirmed, Fernandes said: “I’m very excited for this next step. Spurs is a massive club and the Head Coach was a key part of why I have decided to join.

“When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way – going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try and win every game. I can’t wait to get started, to meet the fans, to meet everyone, and give everything for the Club.”

Sporting director Johan Lange believes Tottenham have secured one of Europe’s brightest young midfielders.

“I’m delighted to welcome Mateus to the Club,” he said.

“He is a player with outstanding technical ability, intelligence and maturity, and even at a young age, has shown he can perform consistently in demanding, high-pressure environments. We believe this is the right place for Mateus to take the next step in his career, working with our outstanding coaching staff and alongside an ambitious and talented group of players.

“I know our supporters will enjoy watching him, as he has the talent, mentality and work ethic to become a very important player both for the present and the future of Tottenham Hotspur.”

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi also welcomed the signing, having tracked Fernandes for some time.

“I’ve admired Mateus for a long time because he combines quality on the ball with the intensity and intelligence that are so important in the way we want to play,” De Zerbi said.

“Despite his age, he already has good experience in the Premier League and has shown quality and consistency at this level.

“Mateus is comfortable under pressure, can progress the ball, works hard for the team and dares to make things happen in difficult moments.

“I believe this is the ideal environment for him to continue his development and I’m excited to start working with him.”

A product of Sporting CP’s academy, Fernandes made his breakthrough in Portugal before a successful loan spell at Estoril earned him a move to Southampton.

He was named the Saints’ Player of the Season after an impressive debut campaign in England before joining West Ham in August 2025.

The midfielder featured in every Premier League match after arriving at the London Stadium, finishing among the division’s leading tacklers while contributing three goals and four assists. His stunning long-range strike against Sunderland also earned West Ham’s Goal of the Season award.

Fernandes has represented Portugal at every youth level and made his senior international debut in April 2026, coming off the bench in a 2-0 win over the United States.
