Tottenham Agree Club-record Deal For Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali

Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of smashing their transfer record for the second time this week after reaching an agreement worth up to £100 million with Newcastle United for Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali.

Spurs will pay an initial £92.5 million, with a further £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons, after seeing an earlier offer of around £80 million turned down. The deal surpasses the £85 million agreement completed earlier this week for Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, making Tonali the club’s most expensive signing.

Manager Roberto de Zerbi has long admired the 26-year-old, having first identified his fellow Italian as a transfer target during his time at Sassuolo when Tonali was playing in Serie A. Tottenham have now moved decisively to secure the midfielder despite interest from Manchester City and Arsenal, neither of whom submitted an official bid.

Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 for £55 million. His first season in England was disrupted by a 10-month suspension imposed by the Italian Football Federation for breaching betting regulations. He returned to play a key role in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup triumph in 2025, ending the club’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy, before helping the Magpies qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Newcastle are already planning for life after the Italian’s departure. The club are understood to have made encouraging progress in their pursuit of Hoffenheim’s 20-year-old Ivory Coast winger Bazoumana Toure as they continue their rebuild following Anthony Gordon’s £69.3 million move to Barcelona.
