Chelsea’s Jesse Derry Excited Over Debut Amid Serious Head Injury Scare

Jesse Derry has spoken of pride and gratitude after a frightening head injury cut short his first Premier League start for Chelsea, insisting the night still felt like a dream realised.

Jesse Derry, 18, was handed his first start against Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge, a milestone moment that quickly turned into a medical emergency.

Naija News reports that Derry clashed heads with Forest defender Zach Abbott late in the first half, prompting a lengthy stoppage as medical staff rushed to his aid. Oxygen was administered on the pitch before he was taken off on a stretcher and transported to St Mary’s Hospital.

Chelsea later confirmed he was “conscious, talking and undergoing precautionary checks”, easing fears after the alarming scenes.

Derry’s response afterwards reflected relief. “A dream come true to start at Stamford Bridge for my Premier League debut,” he wrote on social media. “I’d like to thank all the Chelsea medical staff, everyone at St Mary’s Hospital, my teammates, and all the fans for their great support. I can’t wait to be back playing in front of everyone very soon.”

The teenager’s composure has drawn admiration across the club, especially given the frightening nature of the incident. His father, former midfielder Shaun Derry, built a career with Leeds United and Crystal Palace, and watched his son reach the top flight before the night took a dramatic turn.

Derry was replaced by Liam Delap as a concussion substitute, an allowance under Premier League rules.

The match later saw another heavy collision involving Morgan Gibbs-White and Robert Sanchez, though Forest confirmed their midfielder did not require a concussion substitution.
