Real Madrid Agree Deal For Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella
Real Madrid have reached an agreement to sign Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella in a deal worth €60 million (£51.7m), bringing an end to the Spaniard’s four-year stay at Stamford Bridge.
The agreement includes a fixed fee of €55m, with a further €5m tied to performance-related add-ons. While the final paperwork is yet to be completed, the transfer is expected to be formally concluded early next week.
Marc Cucurella, 27, is currently away with Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. However, all parties have already reached a verbal agreement for the move.
The left-back joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion for £63m in 2022 and went on to make 150 appearances for the Blues. During his time in west London, he helped the club win the Conference League and Club World Cup in 2025.
Interest in the Spain international had been growing in recent months. Both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona made contact with his representatives, while Real Madrid emerged as the frontrunners to secure his signature.
Cucurella’s desire to return to Spain is understood to have played a key role in the deal. His departure comes after a turbulent campaign at Chelsea. Following the mid-season exit of manager Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day, Cucurella publicly questioned the decision.
Speaking earlier this year, he said he “would not have made that decision” and felt the team was “more stable” before Maresca’s departure.
Chelsea endured a disappointing season, finishing 10th in the Premier League and missing out on European qualification. Interim boss Calum McFarlane was unable to reverse the club’s fortunes before successor Liam Rosenior was also dismissed.
Naija News reports that Cucurella was expected to work under new manager Xabi Alonso, who recently took charge of Chelsea ahead of the 2026-27 season. Despite reportedly wanting the defender to remain at Chelsea, Alonso had been informed of the player’s willingness to pursue a move.
Cucurella remains part of Spain national football team’s World Cup squad and is preparing for group-stage matches against Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay before completing his switch to the Spanish giants.
