Real Madrid Confirm Appointment Of José Mourinho
José Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid for a second spell in charge after the club confirmed his appointment as first-team coach until June 30, 2029.
The decision was approved by Real Madrid’s Board of Directors at a meeting chaired by club president Florentino Pérez earlier today, June 11, 2026.
In an official statement, the club said: “The Board of Directors of Real Madrid CF has agreed to appoint José Mourinho as first team coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029.”
Mourinho will officially begin work on July 13 when Real Madrid’s pre-season preparations get underway.
The Portuguese manager, 63, makes a dramatic return to the Santiago Bernabéu 13 years after leaving the club in 2013. His appointment follows the departure of Álvaro Arbeloa and comes after a season in charge of Benfica.
Benfica confirmed earlier this week that Real Madrid were prepared to pay €15 million in compensation to release Mourinho from his contract in Portugal.
Mourinho’s return was one of the key pledges made by Florentino Pérez during his successful re-election campaign. The Madrid president also promised to strengthen the squad with major signings, including Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté, Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries and a potential €150 million move for a new marquee player.
Real Madrid have already tested the market by submitting a reported €150 million offer for Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez, though the bid was rejected.
Mourinho faces the challenge of restoring Madrid’s dominance after the club endured back-to-back seasons without silverware under Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso and Arbeloa.
During his first spell between 2010 and 2013, Mourinho won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, while guiding the club to three consecutive UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
Since leaving Madrid, he has managed Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma, Fenerbahçe and Benfica. His most recent trophy came with Roma in the UEFA Europa Conference League four years ago, while his last league title was won with Chelsea in 2015.
Meanwhile, Mourinho’s influence is already being felt in the transfer market.
Reports indicate Real Madrid have submitted a formal contract proposal to Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva following his departure from Manchester City. Mourinho is said to be driving the move as part of a wider squad rebuild ahead of the new season.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that negotiations are now at an advanced stage, with Madrid hoping to beat rivals Barcelona and Atlético Madrid to the signing of the 31-year-old playmaker.
Silva leaves Manchester City after nine highly successful years, during which he won six Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League and a total of 20 major trophies.
The midfielder recently stated that he would decide his future after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying he intends to join a club “where they really love me”.
