Chelsea Teen Jesse Derry Taken To Hospital After Head Injury

Chelsea teenager Jesse Derry was taken to hospital for precautionary checks after suffering a head injury during the Blues’ 3-1 Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest on Monday night.

Jesse Derry, an 18-year-old forward, making his top-flight debut for Chelsea, collided with Forest defender Zach Abbott inside the penalty area just before half-time. Medical staff rushed onto the pitch and administered oxygen before Derry was stretchered off following a lengthy stoppage.

In a statement released after the incident, Chelsea confirmed the youngster is “conscious, talking and undergoing precautionary checks”.

Caretaker boss Callum McFarlane offered reassurance while speaking to BBC Match of the Day. He said: “All signs are positive at the moment so we’re hopeful he’s in a good condition and from what we’ve heard it’s positive.

“Gutted for Jesse, I thought he did well in the game. He gave us a threat – a massive moment for him that has ended sadly.”

The match marked Derry’s first start for the club after two substitute appearances in the FA Cup earlier this season.

The winger joined from Crystal Palace last summer and has impressed in youth football, scoring 12 goals in 29 academy outings. He also represents the England Under-19 side and is the son of former Leeds United and Palace midfielder Shaun Derry.

The incident led to a penalty for Chelsea, but Cole Palmer saw his effort saved by Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels. Derry was replaced by Liam Delap as a concussion substitute.
