Tobi Amusan Opens Season With 200m Silver In Jamaica

Nigeria’s sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan began her 2026 season on a bright note, finishing second in the women’s 200m at the Velocity Fest in Jamaica.

Better known for her dominance in the 100m hurdles, Amusan showed her range with a season’s best of 23.25 seconds, enough to claim second place in a strong field.

Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah took the win in 22.61 seconds, while compatriot Ackera Nugent finished third in 23.35 seconds.

The race marked Amusan’s first outing since the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she won silver to emerge as Nigeria’s only medallist.

Her performance in Jamaica offers an early glimpse of form as she builds towards a packed international schedule.

Amusan is set to return to her specialist event at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on July 4. The Diamond League fixture at Hayward Field is expected to attract a world-class line-up.

The 28-year-old world record holder, with a time of 12.12 seconds, will face a stacked field that includes Olympic champion Masai Russell, two-time world champion Danielle Williams and World Championships bronze medallist Grace Stark.

Eugene holds special memories for Amusan. She set the current world record and won her maiden world title there at the 2022 championships, before returning to claim the Diamond League final crown in 2023.

She remains one of the leading figures in the event, having won the Diamond League final three years in a row from 2021 to 2023.
