Tobi Amusan Sets New Meet Record To Win Gold At New Taipei Athletics Open

Nigeria’s world record holder, Tobi Amusan, continued her fine form in 2026 after storming to gold in the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the New Taipei Athletics Open in Taiwan on Saturday.

Tobi Amusan crossed the finish line in 12.72 seconds despite a slight headwind of -0.3m/s, comfortably ahead of Chinese Taipei’s Bo Ya Zhang, who settled for silver in 13.17 seconds.

The victory came with an added reward as the Nigerian erased the previous meet record, further cementing her status as one of the leading hurdlers on the global stage.

Saturday’s triumph extends an impressive run of performances for the 29-year-old this season. Amusan claimed her first Diamond League victory of the year in Rabat, Morocco, where she clocked 12.28 seconds to break her own meeting record of 12.45 seconds set in 2025.

That mark matched her season’s best, which she had previously posted at the Xiamen Diamond League. Before her Rabat success, she finished third in Shanghai in 12.41 seconds and placed second in Xiamen with 12.28 seconds, narrowly beaten by American rival Masai Russell.

Amusan has also enjoyed continental success this year. She secured gold in the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the African Championships in Accra, delivering Nigeria’s first gold medal of the competition.

Her 12.28-second run remains among the fastest times recorded anywhere in the world this season and ranks among the best performances of her illustrious career.

Only the world record 12.12 seconds she produced at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, and the 12.24 seconds she recorded at the Meeting de Paris last year stand above it on her all-time list.
