Amusan, Brume, Ashe Lead AFN’s 29-Athlete Commonwealth Games Camp List
Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games have gathered momentum with the invitation of 29 athletes to a national training camp by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).
Leading the list are world record holder and sprint hurdles star Tobi Amusan, long jumper Ese Brume and sprinter Favour Ashe, all expected to play key roles in the country’s medal push at the Games in Scotland.
The names of the invited athletes were published on the Making of Champions 𝕏 handle, with several established internationals and emerging talents making the cut.
Also included are shot put specialist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, sprinter Kanyinsola Ajayi, quarter-miler Patience Okon-George, middle-distance runner Esther Joseph, rising sprint sensation Ella Onojuvwevwo and hurdles standout Ezekiel Nathaniel.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August. It will mark the fourth time Scotland has staged the multi-sport event, having previously hosted the Games in Edinburgh in 1970 and 1986, and in Glasgow in 2014.
The competition presents another opportunity for Nigeria to build on a historic outing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. Team Nigeria produced their best-ever performance at the event, finishing seventh in the overall medals table with 35 medals comprising 12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze.
One of the standout features of that campaign was the dominance of the country’s female athletes, who delivered all 12 gold medals won by Nigeria.
