Wrexham coach, Phil Parkinson has praised goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo for his superb debut in the English third division.

Parkinson went on to commend Arthur Okonkwo for his shot-blocking skills and asserted that he has “real potential” to become a top-tier goalie.

Recall that Okonkwo joined the third-tier club on loan from Arsenal after the club’s goalkeeper, Ben Foster decided to retire after just four games due to a dismal start to the season.

The 22-year-old was in high demand after attracting interest from other European teams while on loan at Sturm Graz and Crewe Alexandra. He has made nine appearances in all competitions so far for Wrexham, conceding eight goals and recording four clean sheets.

“We know he has got real potential,” the Wrexham coach said.

“He came to us without much football behind him in pre-season but he has fitted in well with the lads. He has settled into the area, he has rented an apartment. He has been an important signing for us so far and I think he is going to get better.”

Arthur Okonkwo has represented England at the youth level but he is still eligible to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria thanks to his Nigerian parents.

The former president of the Nigerian Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick first recommended the goalkeeper to former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr.

The Daily claims that ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in January, Okonkwo has been in contact with Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro.

It was also reported that Okonkwo has had multiple conversations about being called up to the Super Eagles team with Austin Eguavoen, the Technical Director of the Nigerian Football Federation.
