Nigerians on social media have reacted to the release of tricycles and sewing machines by the Minister for Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, as part of her women empowerment scheme.

Naija News reports that Ohanenye, in a post via her X handle, said the latest development was in line with an earlier resolution to reduce unemployment and ensure sustainable empowerment for women.

She announced that the distribution of the tricycles and sewing machines would begin from Abuja before extending to other states.

She wrote: “In practical fulfilment of my earlier resolve to reduce the rate of unemployment and also to ensure sustainable empowerment of women is the Introduction of the Pink Riders Transport Scheme and upgrade of our sewing factory.

“Today, I received the first batch of branded Tricycles and industrial sewing machines. The pilot scheme of these machines, especially the Pink Riders, will start from Abuja before we extend to other states.

“This is an era of walking our talks because Nigeria must succeed.”

However, many Nigerians have stormed the comment section of President Bola Tinubu’s minister, criticising her, with claims that there are better ways to empower women than giving out tricycles and sewing machines.

@cuteneka wrote: “Ujunwa are your children taking delivery of these tricycles and having accounts opened to save money so that there will be peace in their homes? Ujunwa you are a modern day woman, apply sense in whatever you do. Thank you”

@Derah91 wrote: “It’s like shamelessness is the number one requirement to be in the APC government. Everybody is just shameless at will.”

@Klef_D wrote: “I literally shed tears. This is what you call empowerment? In 2023? Our mates are empowering their citizens to be fit for purpose in Industry 5.0, you are taking our women to Industry 0.5. Charity begins at home. Empower your first daughter with your amazing empowerment.”
