Three soldiers have been reportedly killed in a shootout which occurred between separatist militants loyal to the Biafra Nations League (BNL) and the Rapid d’Intervention Battalions (BIR), a unit of the Cameroonian armed forces. It was gathered that the latter had attempted to invade the Atabong East communities in the Idabato subdivision of the Bakassi Peninsula when the Biafra militants engaged them in gunbattle. The incident, Naija News learnt, occurred around 4 pm on October 31. The defensive attack on the BIR claimed to be an elite force of the Cameroon President, was reportedly carried out by Dragon Fighter Marine, a faction of the BnL. It is reported that three Cameroonian soldiers lost their lives in the ensuing shootout. The Biafra separatists reportedly operate on the fringes of the Bakassi Peninsula. Daily Post quoted some sources to have disclosed that the battle for control of Idabato did not last up to 30 minutes, and BIR was forced to retreat from the area. The Cameroonians reportedly suffered casualties as they walked into an ambush, and the militant group opened fire from behind. However, as of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian authorities have not issued any official statement to confirm or debunk the event.
