The Super Falcons of Nigeria survived a heavy scare at the hands of Ethiopia as they continued their push to qualify for the 2024 Olympic games in Paris.

This afternoon, October 25, the Super Falcons were at Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa to take on the Lucy of Ethiopia in the first leg of the second round of the 2024 Olympics.

To the dismay of the star-studded Super Falcons led by Asisat Oshoala of FC Barcelona and Rasheedat Ajibade of Atlético Madrid, who was the stand-in captain of the team, they couldn’t crack the defense of their hosts.

To make matters worse for the 9 times African women’s champions and the only women’s team in Africa to play in every edition of the Women’s World Cup, they conceded a goal as early as the 6th minute.

Birkie Amare gave Ethiopia the lead in the 6th minute sending fear to the camp of the Super Falcons who went into the game without their head coach Waldrum. But the Nigerian players were able to soak in the pressure throughout the first half.

In the 51st minute, the Nigerian team came back into the encounter thanks to a superb long-range effort from the stand-in captain, Ajibade.

Unfortunately, despite the Falcons’s flashes of brilliance towards the end of the game, they couldn’t leave Addis Ababa with the maximum three points.

The Super Falcons are expected to finish the job at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on October 31. If they can knock out the East African country, they will face either Uganda or Cameroon in the next round of the qualification series.
