Betsy Obaseki, the wife of Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, will host Nigerian women’s football clubs in the state between October 23 and November 1, 2023.

The women’s clubs are expected to participate in a football tournament organized and funded by the state first lady tagged Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament.

On Friday, October 20, the governor’s wife hosted the unveiling of the mascot and theme of the competition and explained that the competition would be used as a platform to emancipate the girl child.

The theme of this year’s edition of the annual Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament is “End Gender-Based Violence”, and it is reportedly aimed at harnessing sporting talents in the state and a celebration of the state government’s efforts in ending gender-based violence.

The First Lady said, “Edo used to be number one in trafficking worldwide, but now we are nowhere near the top 10.

“So, we continue to power young girls, we want to ensure we help them out. The theme of the first edition was ‘Girl Child Education, while the second edition was ‘Fight Against Drug Abuse,’ which has become a pandemic.

“For the third year, we are tackling gender-based violence, it’s a problem so rife in our state and across the country. Every year, we’ll take up one problem and fight it with the tournament until we move the rock out of the way so that our young people can realize their destinies.”

Naija News gathered that the 2023 Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament will feature thirteen teams.

Edo Queens, Naija Ratels, and Remo Stars are in Group A, while Nasarawa Amazons, Bayelsa Queens, and Confluence Queens are in Group B.

Group C is made up of Rivers Angels, Robo FC, Fortress Ladies, and Heartland Queens, while Group D comprises Delta Queens, Ekiti Queens, and Osun Babes.
