Premier League club, Newcastle United, have reacted to the one-year ban slam on their new signing, Sandro Tonali, for allegedly breaching betting rules.

Sandro Tonali joined Newcastle United from AC Milan for a transfer fee worth €64 million on July 3, 2023.

Since then, the 23-year-old Italian defensive midfielder has played ten games for the Premier League club in all competitions in which he scored a goal.

Hence, it was expected that he would be a huge figure at the club before he was hit with a betting scandal.

The youngster is being investigated by Italian prosecutors and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for placing bets on games involving AC Milan while he was still contracted with the club and also using illegal sites to bet on football games.

Sandro Tonali admitted that he is addicted to betting but didn’t confirm betting on games involving AC Millan. However, the Italian prosecutors found him culpable of breaching betting rules but investigations are still ongoing in other aspects of the allegations.

In reaction to the development, Newcastle United issued a statement on Wednesday that reads: “Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is subject to investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) about illegal betting activity.

“Sandro is fully engaging with the investigation and will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities”.

“He and his family will continue to receive the club’s full support”.

“Due to this ongoing process, Sandro Tonali and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”
