Manchester United and Swedish footballer, Victor Lindelof has lamented over “the cruelty” that led to the death of two Swedish football fans in Brussels, Belgium.

On Monday, October 16, Victor Lindelof followed his Sweden national team to Brussels to play a Euro 2024 qualifier against Belgium.

The first half of the qualification game ended in a 1-1 draw, little did the players and spectators at the stadium know that as the game was ongoing, two Swedish fans were shot dead before the kick-off of the game.

In solidarity with families of the victims and safety concerns, the Sweden national team didn’t turn up for the second half as the game was abandoned.

It was later confirmed that the incident was “a harrowing act of terrorism” as claimed by the Belgium Prime Minister, Alexander de Croo.

Due to the attack, 400 Sweden fans spent the night in hotels under police protection. Also, spectators at the stadium had to wait at the stadium until 22:45 BST before they were evacuated and escorted to safety by the Police.

In his official reaction to the attack, Victor Lindelof who started the game for Sweden, took to his X account to write: “I’m shocked and devastated by the terrible incidents in Brussels with the cold-hearted attacks on our fellow Swedes.

“I’m lost for words for the cruelty and inhumanity. I want to send my deepest condolences to the families and friends of those affected.

“At the same time, my thoughts go out to all the supporters in Belgium last night. No one should ever go to a game of football and feel unsafe when supporting their team.”
