Europa League: Liverpool, Leverkusen Start With Big Win, See Other Results

Austine Jay Jay Okocha has described Nigerian striker, Victor Boniface, who is currently playing for German Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen as an “amazing” player.

Naija News reports that Boniface has been in impressive form since he joined Bayer Leverkusen from Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise in last summer’s transfer window.

Boniface’s impressive start to life in Germany has earned him six goals and two assists in five Bundesliga games. These stats helped him to win the league’s Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month awards for August.

The 22-year-old Nigeria international has been one of the best transfers so far this season with 11 goal contributions in his first seven games in all competitions.

In an interview with, Okocha, who noted how great it is to see a fellow Nigerian doing well in a top league, noted that a talent like Victor Boniface gives the country hope for better days in the game.

“He’s [Boniface] been amazing. It’s always great to see one of our own doing well”, Okocha said.

“He gives us hope. It shows we are not short of talent. We [Nigeria] just need to get our act together!

“It is an exciting time for Nigerian football, and the good thing is their ages, some of them haven’t even hit their prime yet.

“It’s now about finding a way to get the best out of them when they come to play for Nigeria.”

So far this season, Victor Boniface has been receiving praise across the world. Before the commendation from Okocha, the most capped German player of all time and 1990 Ballon d’Or winner, Lothar Matthaus hailed the Nigerian striker, wondering why it took German clubs so long before they could discover the Nigerian youngster.
