Gabon Coup Patriotic, Let The Military Restore True Democracy - Shehu Sani Tells AU, UN
Senator Shehu Sani

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has appealed to the African Union and the United Nations to allow the new government in Gabon to prevail.

The Nigerian former lawmaker expressed hope that doing so will restore dignity and true democracy in Gabon.

Naija News reported earlier that there were jubilations in Gabon after a military junta deposed democratically elected President Ali Bongo and confined him to a house arrest.

The coup plotters in Gabon faulted the just concluded presidential election in the country, which produced Bongo as the winner, describing it as fraudulent.

In a statement earlier, the military officers expressed their determination to safeguard peace by ending the current regime that has lasted over 50 years.

Reacting, however, to the call for the restoration of democratic government in Gabon, Senator Sani described the event in the African country as a conscious and patriotic intervention for the liberation of the Gabonese people.

He urged that the people should be allowed to determine their future.

“What happened in Gabon is not a coup d’etat as usual, but a conscious and patriotic intervention to liberate the Gabonese people after half a century of dictatorship and slavery by one family. I call on all Africans, and in particular, the African Union and the United Nations, to give the new government the opportunity to restore dignity and true democracy in Gabon. Let the Gabonese people determine their future,” Senator Sani wrote on his Twitter handle.
