Arsenal have confirmed that their new signing, Jurrien Timber has sustained anterior cruciate ligament damage to his right knee.

Timber who made his Arsenal debut in the Community Shield triumph against Manchester City on August 6, couldn’t complete his Premier League debut due to the injury.

The injury is so bad that the club would have to sponsor the player to embark on surgery which will sideline him longer than desired.

Jurrien Timber sustained this injury on Saturday, August 12, in Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest.

In the 48th minute of the game which the Gunners won 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium last weekend, the 22-year-old had to go down on the pitch after attempting to control the ball.

Coach Mikel Arteta had to substitute him with Takehiro Tomiyasu in the 50th minute after the player had received medical attention on the pitch. Jurrien Timber limped off the Emirates pitch as the club’s fans applauded him to the bench.

Three days after the game, Arsenal confirmed that the Netherlands international who joined the Gunners from Ajax for a transfer fee worth £34 million this summer, would have to undergo surgery.

The club’s statement also confirmed that Timber “will be out of action for some time” without giving a time frame.

“The support and expertise from our medical team and everyone at the club will now be focussed on Jurrien’s rehabilitation programme, to ensure he recovers well and is back playing as soon as possible”, the club’s statement added.
