There were mixed reactions on and off social media on Friday after a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Maryam ‘Shetty’ Shettima, was delisted from President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial nominee list forwarded to the Senate.

Naija News earlier reported that President Tinubu forwarded an additional 19 names of ministerial nominees to the Senate for screening to complement the previous 28-man list sent to the lawmakers.

The news, however, emerged on Friday that Shetty, who was part of the second list sent to the Senate, has been withdrawn from the ministerial nomination and replaced with Maigari Mahmud, who is also from Kano State.

The development has since stirred mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media, particularly Twitter.

Shetty’s Profile:

Naija News reports that Shetty hails from Kano State, North West geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

The Political and Social Activist, a qualified physiotherapist, and a passionate social entrepreneur is currently 44 years old.

Shetty had her First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) and Secondary School education in Kano. She furthered her education at the Federal School of Physiotherapy at Bayero University, where she finished her BSc with distinction.

She worked briefly with Dala Orthopedic and Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospitals in Kano before she went to London to further her education at the University of East London, Stratford, in the United Kingdom, where she obtained her Master’s degree in sports physiotherapy.

Maryam is single and yet to be married.

Her expertise was in high demand, leading her to become a valued member of the medical team during the London Olympics. Among the elite athletes she worked with was the world record holder and sprinting legend Usain Bolt, from Jamaica, Naija News understands.

Not limiting her pursuits to healthcare, Maryam embarked on a journey of social change by obtaining a Kingian Non-Violence Practitioner certificate from Emory University in the United States, inspired by the principles of the renowned Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

Further, she honed her knowledge in public policy by earning a certificate in Public Policy Challenges of the 21st Century from the University of Virginia.

With a rich background in both clinical and international development sectors, Maryam’s work has left a lasting impact. She has contributed to the UKAid-funded programme, PATHS 2, and provided her expertise at the State House Clinic in the Presidential Villa, as well as the Child Care and Wellness sector.

Naija News understands that Shetty also led the successful rehabilitation of schools in her native state of Kano through the remarkable #GivingBack initiative, making a significant difference in the lives of countless students.

The culmination of her dedication to her country came when she was chosen to represent Nigeria at the United Nations General Assembly. As part of the committee of accountability and transparency and Anti-corruption, she showcased her unwavering commitment to her nation.

In the political sphere, Maryam’s involvement has been equally impactful. She was an essential member of the APC Presidential Campaign Team in the last election, handling various roles, including Field Operations and Strategic Communication for the Youths and Women Presidential Campaign Team.

She played a crucial role in ensuring a commendably peaceful election Congress in Delta State.

With her political acumen and dedication to her party, Maryam became a prominent APC Chieftain. Her contributions to the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council were highly valued, as she played a critical role in the selection of the APC Presidential Candidate.

Maryam’s remarkable contributions have not gone unnoticed. She received an Honorary Degree from the ESGT University of Technology, Benin Republic, in recognition of her outstanding leadership and community development efforts.
