Morocco women’s team have joined two other African teams – Nigeria and South Africa – in the round of 16 at the ongoing 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Morocco who suffered a massive 6-0 defeat in their opening game at their debut World Cup, bounced back to winning ways by beating South Korea 1-0 in their second group game and then beat Colombia 1-0 earlier today.

Those two wins and Germany’s failure to beat South Korea in the other Group H encounter helped Morocco to finish second in the group, on equal points with Colombia who have superior goals difference.

Seven of the eight 2023 Women’s World Cup debutants had already exited the tournament before the Morocco Vs Colombia clash. Initially, the Philippines were looking like they were the only debutants who had a chance of making it to the next round after beating the co-hosts New Zealand but that was the best they could get from the tournament.

In the round of 16, Morocco will play France in Adelaide on Tuesday, August 8, while Colombia will play Jamaica on the said date.

On the other hand, Germany who are two times champions of the Women’s World Cup ended their journey in the 2023 edition of the tournament in the group stage after a 1-1 draw with South Korea who are also eliminated from the tournament.

This means that for the first time in the 32 years history of the Women’s World Cup, Germany won’t play in the round of 16.
