Kylian Mbappe Calls PSG ‘Divisive’ Club

Paris Saint Germain and France international, Kylian Mbappe, has described his current team as “divisive” amidst contract tension between him and the club.

Even before the summer transfer window opened, Kylian Mbappe notified PSG that he would extend his contract which is set to expire on June 30, 2024.

This means that the 24-year-old striker who is currently PSG’s all-time leading scorer could leave the club for free next summer since he had said he doesn’t plan to leave the club this summer.

However, the club’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi had said he would stop Mbappe from leaving the club on a free transfer when his contract expires next summer. He intends to do that by selling him this summer or mandating him to extend his contract by a season.

Mbappe scored 41 goals in all competitions last season to help PSG win their 11th league title. He joined the team from Monaco in 2017 and has since helped the team win 5 Ligue 1 titles.

He almost helped PSG to win the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the history of the club but Bayern Munich defeated them in the final by a lone goal in the 2019-2020 season.

Last season, the same Bayern Munich knocked them out of the tournament in the round of sixteen, a situation that pushed the club’s fans to agitate against Neymar and Lionel Messi who has now left the club for Inter Miami in the MLS.

Luis Enrique, who took over as head coach last week after Christophe Galtier resigned, is in charge of a club that is undergoing what many described as a rebuild.

Messi has exited the club, 31-year-old Brazilian striker Neymar’s future is uncertain, and Mbappe seems unhappy with the entire project in Paris.

Some of the reasons why Mbappe wants to leave PSG include not being able to win the Champions League despite a series of efforts, and not being considered worthy of the Ballon d’Or despite being the best player in the French Ligue 1 in the last five seasons successively.

In an interview with France Football, the French magazine behind the Ballon d’Or, Mbappe blamed the divisive nature of PSG for his failure to win the award.

“I think that playing for PSG doesn’t help much because it’s a divisive team, a divisive club,” Mbappe said.

On why PSG has failed to win the Champions League, Mbappe added, “We did what we could. You have to talk to the people who make the team, who organize the squad, who build this club.”
