Admiral Awwal Gambo

On Saturday, July 8, the Nigerian Navy commenced the ceremonies for the pull-out of former Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu sacked and approved the retirement of all service chiefs in June, weeks after assuming the seat of power.

Among those newly appointed by the President is Rear Admiral E. A. Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff.

Speculations earlier, however, claimed that retired Gambo, despite a presidential directive, chose to remain in his position.

According to sources that spoke with Peoples Gazette, Gambo plans to leave office in the latter days after settling several financial matters, including payment of billions of naira to contractors and naval officers.

While the other service chiefs have obeyed the presidential order, Gambo remains in his position, citing unresolved issues.

He insists that he is responsible for releasing funds to the Nigerian Navy and will not leave the office until he fulfils this obligation.
