Lagos Guber: Rhodes-Vivour Calls Out INEC, Police Over Voter Intimidation

The Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of underperforming since getting into power.

Speaking on Thursday during an interview appearance on Channels Television Sunrise Daily, the Labour Party candidate said the administration of Pa Lateef Jakande in Lagos from October 1979 to December 1983 achieved more than the APC has done.

Rhodes-Vivour made the submission while defending allegations that he doesn’t have any public service experience that makes him fit for the governorship seat.

He argued that Jakande also never had public service experience before becoming governor but performed excellently well in office.

The candidate also cited an example of Obafemi Awolowo to further emphasize that public service experience is not necessary to achieve good governance.

“Alhaji Lateef Jakande never had any public sector experience but what he achieved in four years the APC government has not achieved in two decades,” Rhodes-Vivour said.

He added that “The visionary leader, Obafemi Awolowo, he had no public sector or governance experience but he moved the interest of the Yorubas to a level that people are still trying to aspire to. The fact is you must have empathy, self-capacity and courage to do the right thing.”

The LP also scored the APC government low in accountability, stating that the youths are interested in government accountability.

“This government has run unaccountably for over two decades. They’ve empowered agberos, touts and thugs with so much violence. And they have not been brought to book.”

On INEC Postponement

Rhodes-Vivour stated during the programme that the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to move the governorship and state assemblies’ elections from March 11 to March 18 did not unsettle him.

“It is not about rushing an election; it is about getting it right and that is why we got the injunction to ensure that INEC actually follows its processes. There are a lot of things that must be done right if we want to get this country on the right path,” he said.

He however said INEC would have to win his trust again after the experiences of the February 25 presidential and national assembly elections.
