Transfers: Man United To Dump Skipper To Raise Funds

Alan Shearer has rolled out his opinion to Gareth Southgate that starting Harry Maguire at the World Cup tournament would be a “big risk”.

Naija News recalls that the Manchester United skipper had a significant role in the squad that advanced to the 2018 World Cup semifinals.

However, after England advanced to the Euro 2020 final, he was picked for the tournament team.

Naija News reports that the defender has only made four appearances for Manchester United in the Premier League this season due to recent struggles.

Shearer believes the defender shouldn’t play for England at the World Cup since he’s not a consistent starter for Erik ten Hag’s team.

Shearer discussed England’s possibilities at centre back with Sky Bet and said, “Harry Maguire has done incredibly well for England over recent tournaments and we know Gareth likes to go to his favourites who have served him well in the past, and Harry Maguire has.

“But if you’re not playing club football, it’s a huge, huge gamble and a huge ask of the individual to be thrown into a World Cup, the biggest tournament ever, without having any games behind you.”

Shearer’s assertion was supported by former England defender Jamie Carragher, who added that it would be “very tough” to choose Maguire above any other defender.
