Wike Will Still Not Get What He Wants If Ayu Resigns – Emmanuel Agbo

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former deputy national secretary of the party, Emmanuel Agbo has said that the party will fall into crisis if the national chairman Iyorchia Ayu resigns.

Agbo, during an interview with Arise news said that if Ayu resigns from his position, according to provision made by the PDP constitution a northerner will end up taking over.

Naija News reports that the Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike and his supporters are calling for the resignation of Ayu under the premise that the two strongest positions in the party cannot be handled by individuals from the same zone, considering the fact that the party’s presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar is also a northerner.

This has led to a rift in the party as Ayu and Atiku have refused to give in to Wike’s demands

Speaking on the crisis plaguing the party, Agbo noted that if Ayu resigns, the constitution has clearly stated that the deputy national chairman from the zone in which the officer comes from takes over.

He said, “Section 35 (3C) of that constitution says that in the event of resignation, incapacitation of any officer, same here of the national chairman, as the case is, the deputy national chairman from the zone in which the officer comes from takes over. If truly the issues are not individualistic, if it is on the north and south dichotomy as they have made us to believe, the person that is supposed to assume that office immediately, assuming Ayu resigns today, is Umar from the North-East, and Umar is not only from the north, he is from the North-East where our candidate comes from. Unless they are calling for his resignation, and then he will ask them what he has done.

 “There are constitutional impediments to this call. Section 47 (6), says that in the event that there is a vacancy created in any executive committee at any level, the executive committee at that level will go to the area and the zone to bring a replacement. It means that even if Ayu willingly resigns, I know that the North-Central where he comes from will go and ask for their position.

“My take is that it will create multiple problems both constitutional for the party and resolving any particular problem on hand.”
