Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Saturday 20th August 2022.

The PUNCH: As political campaigns and the 2023 general elections draw near in the face of festering insecurity in most parts of the country, the police have confirmed that there is a surge in the request for protection by politicians. With campaigns for presidential and National Assembly elections commencing on September 28 and the general elections starting on February 25, the police noted that more applications were being received and more still were being expected, but pointed out that not every application would be granted.


The Guardian: The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) and Media Rights Agenda (MRA), yesterday, condemned the decision of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to shut down the operations of 52 broadcast stations in the country over an N2.6 billion debt.


This Day: The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) yesterday revoked the licences of the AIT/RayPower FM, Silverbird TV and 50 other broadcasting stations across the country over N2.6 billion indebtedness to the regulatory body. In a swift reaction, the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), all described the action of the NBC as harsh and insensitive, in view of the economic crisis in the country, and called for immediate reversal.


The Nation: President Muhammadu Buhari opted to invoke the  no work, no pay policy against striking university lecturers on Thursday after receiving the status report on the negotiation with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from Education Minister Adamu Adamu.


Daily Trust: A viral post on the social media from an unknown source reads, “Flight ticket is now between N100,000 and N150,000. And going by road, one is faced with the risk of being kidnapped and forced to pay certain amounts of money, ranging from N30million to N100million, depending on one’s kidnappers. The choice is yours. Naija we hail.”
