Justice Anokam, a prison escapee, has been nabbed by police officials from Iheagwa Division in Imo State for reportedly stabbing a pregnant woman to death at Umuejechi Nekede, a community in Owerri West Local Government.

The unidentified victim, according to Punch, was a tenant in the area but an Imo native from the Ohaji/Egbema LGA.

A resident, Iyke Opara, said the pregnant woman came out from the popular Ama-Ato junction before she was accosted by the suspect.

The suspect, according to Opara, has been terrorizing the neighbourhood since his April 2021 jailbreak in Imo.

The suspect, who claimed he was on drugs when questioned, allegedly became upset and attacked the woman with a dagger after he asked her for money to eat and she refused.

According to the source, she told him to mind his business which infuriated him and he removed a dagger from his trousers and stabbed her in the stomach.

The woman was said to have lost a lot of blood and was pronounced dead on getting to the hospital.

Opara added that the culprit escaped immediately, but local kids tracked and arrested him after he attempted to stab them multiple times.

Anokam, who is believed to be in his 30s, was apprehended by Nekede vigilantes before being turned over to detectives from the Ihiagwa Police Division, despite strong opposition from community youths who had planned to lynch him until police intervention.
