2023: Sowore Emerges AAC Presidential Candidate

Publisher and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) for the 2023 elections.

Sowore emerged unchallenged at the AAC convention that took place on Thursday at an event centre in Abuja on Thursday.

Prior to his emergence as the party’s presidential candidate, Sowore had earlier on Thursday stepped down as the party’s national chairman.

Being the only aspirant for the post, Naija News reports he was just affirmed by the party. He was also the party’s 2019 presidential candidate.

It will be recalled that back on June 2, 2022, Sowore was affirmed as the National Chairman of the party by a Court of Appeal in Abuja.

The court in its ruling noted that a 2019 judgement by the High Court which sacked Sowore as the chairman of AAC was out of the court’s jurisdiction, adding that it was an internal affair.

Justice Iyang Ekwo in a judgement in 2019 had ruled that it was satisfied that Sowore had been suspended by the National Executive Committee of the party.

The Appeal Court, however, nullified the judgement on Thursday and declared Sowore as the national chairman as against one Leonard Nzenwa.

The court subsequently awarded a sum of N200,000 to the applicants.
