Arewa Youths React To Fuel Subsidy Removal Announcement

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has taken a swipe at those demanding a power shift in 2023 and for zoning to be applied in determining how the next Nigerian leader will emerge.

In what appeared like an obvious shade against the southern region, the AYCF National President, Yerima Shettima declared that only lazy people are in support of zoning.

He added that zoning is undemocratic and shouldn’t be a yardstick in choosing the next president of Nigeria.

Shettima made the submission amidst the rising calls for the 2023 presidency to be zoned to the south in the interest of fairness, equity and justice.

However, the AYCF president in a chat with Daily Post said zoning is not good for Nigeria’s democracy.

“I’m an advocate of opposing anything zoning, let’s practice the true norm of democracy, let people come on board and decide what they want, that is the true culture of democracy.

“Anything short of that is not good for the country; only a lazy section of the country would continue to clamour for zoning.

“Zoning has been jettisoned since 2011, and that is why we are solidly behind the position of the Northern Elders Forum under the leadership of Prof. Ango Abdullahi.

“He spoke our minds, and that is the best thing for the country right now. Let the best candidates come forward, and we test them on their competency level,” Shettima submitted.

Naija News understands Shettima made the submission in his reaction to comments attributed to him asking the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu to withdraw his statement that the party has not taken a position on zoning.

According to him, he didn’t make any such statement at any point in time about zoning.
