Over 10 unknown gunmen on Thursday invaded one of the banks in Anambra and hoisted Biafra flags after destroying vehicles on the premises.
It was gathered that the gunmen attacked the bank which is located at Abagana, Njikoka local government area at around 4pm shooting sporadically.
The shooting in front of the old generation bank scared passersby, customers and staff who took to their heels.
According to a witness, the gunmen drove in black Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV).
The source further said they set fire on a Nissan Pathfinder SUV with registration number UR 640 KJA and smashed glasses of a Honda car with registration number FST 456 AC, all parked in front of the bank.
Confirming the incident, Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu said the Command was already after the gunmen.
According to him: “Those hoodlums were pursuing their target and when they could not get him, they started shooting sporadically in the air.
“They smashed some vehicles but we can not ascertain at the moment whether anyone was injured or the actual damage caused as a result
“The Command will not allow such hoodlums to run over Anambra State. Investigations are on to actually, unravel the cause of the incident.”
Recall that the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, had earlier denied the group has plans to attack banks in the Southeast to get money to buy weapons for its Eastern Security Network (ESN).
Speaking in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB said there is no truth in rumours that it has plans to attack banks in the southeast and steal money.
It said those behind the rumour are out to blackmail the group and paint them in a bad light before members of the public.
Particularly, it accused the Department of State Services (DSS) as been behind the rumour.
