The Senator representing Kano Central senatorial district, Ibrahim Shekarau, has revealed his view on the social media bill which has attracted reactions from Nigerians.
The former governor of Kano State stated that the proposed bill has given Nigerians the opportunity to express their opinions and reservations.
The Senate Chairman Committee on Establishment and Public Service said, “Our distinguished colleague, Senator Mohammed Musa (APC-Niger East) has sponsored a Bill ‘Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulations Bill 2019’ It has passed first and second reading and it is going afterwards to committee levels whereby inputs and contributions from all stakeholders be taken and reflected.”
“Nigerians have expressed diverse opinions and reservations on the proposed bill, it is democracy in action, this ninth Senate which I am part of, is listening and your representatives are ready to accommodate all your grievances, I Senator Ibrahim Shekarau APC-K Central, will practically lead in advocating an all-encompassing and the best-accommodating legislation for Nigeria and Nigerians in this regard”.
He stated that in this digital world it is more advantageous to fight against corruption, unemployment and improve the country with all media platforms.
“Even the advanced democracies and knowledge-based economies are finding it challenging to curtail misinformation and misuse of these tools, but we at the same time must devise ways to address these issues in the interest of our overall national security, social harmony and political stability”.
The Senator stated that he will continue to work on the development of Nigeria, “it is our collective responsibility and will continue making efforts in entrenching good governance”.
