Abia APC Rejects Tribunal Decision

The Abia state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has reacted to the Tribunal judgement that overturned the election victory of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu on Monday.

The party rejected the judgement of the National and State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, urging its members to remain calm as it will appeal the judgment.

Recall as earlier reported by Naija News, the National and State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abia State nullified Kalu’s election on Monday, September 9.

The tribunal also ordered a re-run election for the Abia North Senatorial District.

Recall that the National and State House of Assembly Elections Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia had nullified the election of the Senate Chief Whip, Orji Kalu, for Abia North Senatorial District.

Delivering its judgment on Monday, a member of the three-member tribunal, Justice I.P.C Igwe, said that the petitioner, Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), successfully proved his allegation of substantial non-compliance with the provisions of the 2010 Electoral Act (as ammended) in the election which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared victory for Kalu.

However, Comrade Benedict Godson, Publicity Secretary of APC in Abia state, told newsmen in Umuahia on Monday, that the party would appeal the decision of the tribunal.

He urged all APC supporters to remain calm.

“We reject the judgement of the tribunal completely. We call on everyone, Abians, party supporters and the ever dedicated followers of OUK political history to remain calm as every necessary legal means will be applied to appeal this judgement,” Godson said.

Meanwhile, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has also vowed to appeal the judgement of the Abia State Election Tribunal that voided his election into the National Assembly.

Reacting in a statement by his media office, the former Abia governor urged his supporters not to lose hope.

He charged members and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remain strong, steadfast and law-abiding.
